The Saint Marker

Volume 2, Issue 29                                                                                          August 27, 2010

Music Notes

Stop to think before you answer this question:  are you a singer?  No, you say? Do you ever sing in the shower? How about in the car with the radio? The ABC song with your five-year-old? A lullaby to your baby? "Your" song to your spouse?
 Drawing of three singers
Everyone sings, in all cultures, through all time. It's just that in America today, because of American Idol and its ilk, we are increasingly conditioned to think that singing is only for the talented. That singing is something we watch rather than something we do.

In the Bible, the word sing appears more than one-hundred times. From Exodus to Samuel to Chronicles and Isaiah, we are told "sing to the Lord a new song."  The Book of Psalms-he songbook of Jesus-mentions singing sixty-five times. In the New Testament, the exhortation continues as Paul describes communal worship: "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord. . ."

At St. Mark's we place a high priority on corporate worship. Our worship includes listening and responding. Our response is both spoken and in song.  On Sunday when you come to church, even if you don't usually feel comfortable singing, be open to our corporate song.  Then open your mouth and "sing with joy to God our strength, sing with joy, sing with joy."

New Adult Offerings for Fall
Artwork for Adult Education Brochure
All summer long, Fr. Mark and I have been preaching about spiritual transformation.  God wants to change us-to make us into new people, the way a caterpillar is transformed into a butterfly.  The change process is not something we do; it is God's work in us through the Holy Spirit.  However, the spiritual disciplines we have been talking about-prayer, solitude, study, giving, confession, worship, community-are designed to create an environment where transformation can happen.

Think about the creation of life.  Each newborn baby is God's creation-but a man and a woman had something to do with it!  That's how the spiritual disciplines work.

One great way to open ourselves up to transformation is to set apart time to learn and grow in community.  This fall, we have some wonderful new studies taking place, which you can discover in the Adult Spiritual Formation brochure which has just been completed.  One very convenient and excellent study I would like to highlight is Challenging Lifestyles, which is being offered in the rectory during the 9:00 service.  Jan Kraus and Sherri Gerard will lead this video course taught by Nicky Gumbel, creator of the Alpha Course.  Based on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, it is an excellent follow-up to Alpha, and also a perfect way for anyone to try a fun, accessible Bible teaching.

We have classes and studies available almost every day/evening of the week.  Look over the brochure in church, or click here to review it on-line.

Yours in Christ,
- Pastor Claudia +

McGregor Publishes Second Book

SAMS-USA (Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders) recently announced the publication of Patsy McGregor's second book, The Detour: An Off-Road Safari (Xulon Press, March, 2010).  Many St. Markers enjoyed her first book, A Guest in God's World, which chronicled the early years of ministry and raising a family in Madagascar.  Patsy's new book "offers reflections from her own life and devotional insights for others who have found the highway of life barricaded and been forced to travel 'off-road 'for a time."  Patsy's writing style wins the reader's heart with its honesty, penetrating insights, and humor.  This book can be purchased at amazon.com.

Footprints in the Sand: Original and Revised Versions

Fellow Pilgrims:

You are probably familiar with the devotional poem Footprints. But just in case you are not, let me share with you the words attributed to Mary Stevenson in 1936:

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord, "You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?" The Lord replied, "The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you."

In my August essay on the Spiritual Director's page in St. Mark's website, I will be looking at the revised version of this devotional classic and what it can teach us.

Hunger Resource Network Seeks Input

To all volunteers interesting in feeding those in need throughout the Fox Valley:

Please join Hunger Resource Network members on Monday, August 23, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Kendall County Food Pantry, 1204 Deer Street in Yorkville.

The focus will be on how we are doing at the various farms and farmers markets and addressing challenges and celebrating successes. We also want to look at what the next step should be to help those agencies who distribute food to the needy.

Do you know someone who would like to integrate a data base into hungerresourcenetwork.org? We are looking for someone to take this important step.

Feel free to invite your friends who share your interest but please let me know how many people will be attending so we may properly set up the meeting space.

We look forward to meeting all of you on the 23rd.

Hunger Resource Network is a non-denominational 501-C-3 not-for-profit organization with the mission of alleviating hunger by linking business partners and volunteers with recipient agencies in an efficient and caring manner.
