St. Mark’s Church welcomes children with special-needs and their families!

With individualized instruction and/or support, we enable children with special needs to experience God’s love and grace along with providing opportunities to fully participate in the life of our church.

St. Marks Episcopal church in Geneva has starting a new ministry this fall that brings a new level of support to children with special needs. Beginning with the children’s ministry, Carol Rennolds, Director of Children’s Ministries and Liz Rein, a special education professional and a mom of a child with special needs have collaborated together to build a Sunday School Program that supports children with disabilities. They currently have a two pronged approach to delivering individualized education. The first is to give educational and social support to children who are able to learn within the regular classroom setting. The other program offers a more structured specialized classroom designed to maximize learning and develop a feeling of community. This classroom is a “reverse inclusion” model where other children come into the classroom to join the special needs children as peers in their Sunday School Program.

The long term mission for this ministry is to develop disciples within the disability community at St. Mark’s by sharing Christ’s salvation and equipping the congregation with the tools to minister to their special needs and in doing so, prepare them to serve in the church so that the body of Christ at St. Marks will be complete and serve as a witness to the love of Christ for all that enter.
