ST. MARK’S CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES
The Road to Emmaus – The Early Years
Christian Education for Ages 3–12

The focus of St. Mark’s children’s ministries is to develop a child’s personal relationship with God. By the time students graduate from children’s to youth ministries, they possess an understanding of: 1) the need for and ministry of Jesus’ life; 2) the general content and application of God’s Word; and 3) how to leverage the strength of the Holy Spirit.

St. Mark’s is a liturgical church, rooted in Anglican tradition. We offer tailored curriculum in over 90 percent of our children’s ministry classrooms. Each year of instruction has been strategically developed to grow children to meet the next stage of spiritual development. However, we welcome newcomers at every level regardless of where children may be in their walk with Christ.

Preschool: Children & Worship
An Introduction to Worship
This multi-sensory approach is designed to show children how to worship God independently and in a corporate worship setting. In keeping with this vision, class structure loosely reflects the typical Anglican service: welcome, praise songs, Bible story, discussion, time for feast, and prayer time. Bible stories and parables are presented using wooden figures and other materials. Children learn who Jesus is, what Jesus teaches about the kingdom of God, and why Jesus calls people to follow Him.
Memory Deliverable(s): Anglican Church Responses & Praise Music

Kindergarten: Following Jesus
An Introduction to Prayer
Following Jesus provides children with an understanding of how to be in relationship with God through prayer. Children are exposed to the power of prayer through prayer requests and understanding the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer. Bible stories taught using manipulatives foster participation in corporate worship and group prayer as well as teaching the faith it takes to follow Jesus. Class structure continues to model the traditional Anglican service and builds on the foundation set in Children & Worship.
Memory Deliverable(s): The Lord’s Prayer

First Grade: Learning God’s Commands
Understanding the Blessings of Being Obedient
This program covers an in-depth review of the Ten Commandments as exemplified by those who first chose to be obedient in following Jesus—the apostles. In this year-long study, children are taught how God’s code of conduct guides our lives. Supplemented with David C. Cook curriculum, this program provides for Bible stories, crafts, and group prayer time all focused on receiving the blessings of obedience.
Memory Deliverable(s): The Ten Commandments & the Twelve Apostles

Second Grade: Choosing Salvation
The Gift of Holy Communion
This customized year-long curriculum is designed to prepare second graders for their first Holy Communion. Children are taught: 1) how Old Testament events led to our need for a savior, 2) how God sent Jesus to fill that role, 3) how Jesus’ ministry and sacrifice served the Lord, 4) an understanding of why we take Communion. Using supplemental materials, students identify the mechanics of Holy Eucharist and receive and utilize the Book of Common Prayer. As children ready their hearts to be in communion with God, they will be called to address the following questions:

  • Who is Jesus?
  • Do I want to follow Jesus?
  • Do I want to receive/enter the kingdom of God?
  • Memory Deliverable(s): Prayer of Confession & Prayer of Humble Access
    Spiritual Milestone: Holy Communion Celebration

Third Grade: Knowing God’s Word, Part One
    The Old Testament
St. Mark’s customized third-grade curriculum has been designed to help children understand:

  • how we know the Bible is real
  • when and by whom the Bible was written
  • how familiar Bible stories fit into the Bible
  • where Bible stories took place
  • how people lived during Bible times
  • Each week we will review one or more books of the Old Testament. Hands-on lessons require children to frequently use their Bibles (which are given to students in the beginning of the year), thereby enabling them to navigate God’s Word easily by the end of the school year.

Memory Deliverable(s): Books of the Bible (Old & New Testaments)

Fourth Grade: Knowing God’s Word, Part Two
    The New Testament
Part Two of Knowing God’s Word focuses on the 27 books of the New Testament. This interactive study pulls on knowledge gained from third grade’s Old Testament overview to bring the Good News alive in a fun and informative way. By year end students understand:

  • what occurred during the 400 years that passed between the Old and New Testaments
  • the life and times of Christ
  • the history of the modern church
  • how Paul’s letters affect our lives today
  • Memory Deliverable(s): 23rd Psalm

    Fifth Grade: Living God’s Way
Embracing Why God’s Way Is Better
The focus of this customized curriculum is to prepare children for life application study. By leveraging their understanding of the Bible as learned in third and fourth grades, children are now instructed on how to read the Bible and discern its Word (contextual relations in content, narrative versus normative interpretation, and proper biblical intention). Through an examination of Scripture, the Nicene Creed, and a review of Proverbs, children explore how to apply God’s commands, God’s Word, and the power of the Holy Spirit to their lives.

Memory Deliverable(s): The Nicene Creed & assorted Scripture verses
