Living Out Membership

How do I become a member at St. Mark's Church?

If you are baptized and want to make St. Mark's your church home, then you are a member!

If you are not baptized, then we will provide instruction in the Christian faith that will help you decide whether you want to join God's Church.

Some people who were baptized may want to renew their baptismal vows or be confirmed. See Fr. Mark or Pastor Claudia for more information.

What does it mean to be a member?

Membership is not a status—but at St. Mark's means living out faith in community. At St. Mark's we define Christians as people who give as much of themselves as they know to as much of Jesus Christ as they know. A member is growing in his or her knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.

A Member is Alive in Christ

Attending worship, forming relationships, getting to know others, and letting them know us.

Learning about Jesus Christ, and walking with Him in a wonderful, lifelong journey.

Involved in a community, activity, or program at St. Mark's where we are energized, doing something we love, and being with people.

Viewing ourselves, our families, and our world through God's perspective.

Evangelizing is not a scary word, but a way of loving others and sharing the Good News in word and deed.

Where do I begin?

We are all at different places in our Christian journey. Begin with One Step. Here are some ideas:

1. Come to Sunday worship. Introduce yourself to clergy, a greeter, or any St. Marker, and fill out a Response Card. If you have children or teenagers, ask the greeters to direct you to the Sunday school. We have exceptional programs for young people during the 9:00 service. Children are always welcome in any of our services.

2. Help us to know you. Let us know how we can contact you and keep you informed of what's happening.

3. Attend a fellowship event. St. Mark's throws great parties! Take advantage of these opportunities to get to know people.

5. Serve in a way that's right for you. Don't get overwhelmed, but try out a few service opportunities that will help you to meet people and find your place. If you need advice, ask Fr. Mark or Pastor Claudia.

6. Attend an Alpha Course. The Alpha Course is a fun introduction to the Christian faith. There you will get to know clergy and form lasting friendships as you discuss faith issues over supper. It will orient you to the core beliefs and values of St. Mark's and help you get started on your Christian journey.

7. Keep growing. There are many opportunities to grow in your faith. See our page on Adult Spiritual Formation.

8. Give joyfully. Scripture tells us that God honors the faithful giver and provides for our needs in wonderful ways. Many St. Markers have discovered this to be true. Many members are working towards the goal of tithing—giving 10 percent of their income—and some surpass it. The key is to give regularly. Start at a level where you feel comfortable, then challenge yourself to grow a little each year.

9. Pray! Prayer makes it all possible!

10. Ask questions. We are always delighted to meet with parishioners to provide pastoral guidance and care and to help you find your place at St. Mark's Church.
