Flower Guild
The Flower Guild is responsible for providing the church
and chapel with beautiful flower arrangements all throughout the year. The
Flower Guild members at St. Mark's follow the pattern set up for the church
year by the readings for each Sunday and by the liturgical season. Each week
the readings have a theme -- a message that ties them together. The clergy
use this theme as a starting point for the sermon; the musicians use it for
making selections; and the flowers often reflect that theme also. An obvious
example is weaving fish nets through the flower arrangements to illustrate
the gospel reading where fishermen were asked to cast their nets to become
fishers of men. On another Sunday, the arrangements include apples to
reinforce the image of the verse we all read together from Psalm 17:
"...keep me as the apple of your eye." Sometimes the theme does
not translate as easily in a visual way, so the flowers will highlight the
dedication or the color for that liturgical season; for instance, blue
during the season of Advent. Sometimes the arrangements may just represent a
joy to the glory of God. May the flowers fill your mind and spirit in
whatever way their message touches you.
The Flower Guild
is open to all who would like to learn about flowers. Classes are offered
for beginners and as a refresher to experienced arrangers. We have about a
dozen members at present, and each arranger volunteers about one Saturday
morning a month. For further information, please contact Margy
Walkington, the Director of the Flower Guild. |
