Report: Sunday, August 8, 2004
Day one,
Thursday Aug. 5 saw safe passage over the ocean.
Day two, Friday Aug. 6 saw weary travelers getting off the
bus and going right into a rehearsal and short recital at York
Minster. No one fainted, though one singer was close!
Day three, Sat. Aug. 7 was a day for us to take a break
from being responsible for music. We visited the ruins of
Fountains Abbey in the Yorkshire Dales, and then went on to see
how Wensleydale cheese was made, by hand. Yummy dinner with their
cheese products. Reminded me of Wisconsin... only even creamier.
Day four, Sunday Aug. 8 (today) saw us attend a sung
Eucharist service at York Minster. As we walked through the gate,
the bells were pealing. It was a stunning sound.
The worship inside was even more stunning. Indeed we heard the
very same Scriptures that I knew would be read at St. Mark's later
that day in your time zone, and we even sang some of the same
hymns. It was powerful to experience the beauty of liturgy and
song in that immense space. The reverberation was staggering. The
eyes of our St. Mark's children and youth were big as saucers.
Afterwards, Josh Mangis remarked, "That was great. I think we did
more standing than we usually do at St. Mark's, though...."
Later on we hopped board the bus and spent the afternoon at Castle
Howard; a private home still lived in, and also the setting for
the PBS mini-series "Brideshead Revisited," from the early 80's
starring Jeremy Irons and Laurence Olivier. Lovely day with
unusually hot weather, but a nice breeze.
Then, back to York for some ghost stories and history about York,
on an intriguing "Ghost Tour" at dusk. Boo!
